Subordinating and coordinating discourse relations

چکیده
This paper studies the distinction between subordinating and coordinating discourse relations, a distinction that governs the hierarchical structure of discourse. We provide linguistic tests to clarify which discourse relations are subordinating and which are coordinating. We argue that some relations are classified as subordinating or coordinating by default, a default that can be overridden in specific contexts. The distinction between subordinating and coordinating relations thus belongs to the level of information packaging in discourse and not to the level of information content or the semantics of the relations themselves. # 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Concurrent Discourse Relations
The Penn Discourse Treebank (PDTB) was released to the public in 2008 and remains the largest corpus of manually annotated discourse relations — both relations that are signaled explicitly (e.g., by a coordinating or subordinating conjunction, or by a discourse adverbial or other construction) and ones that otherwise appear implicit. The Penn Discourse TreeBank also diverges from other discours...
متن کاملThai Text Coherence Structuring with Coordinating and Subordinating Relations for Text Summarization
Text summarization with the consideration of coherence can be achieved by using discourse processing with the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). Additional problems on relational ambiguity may arise, especially in Thai. For example, the use of cue words, i.e. “tae/แต่” (meaning “but”), can be identified as a contrast relation or an elaboration relation. Therefore, we propose the reduction of the...
متن کاملThe Moving Right Frontier
This paper analyzes systematic cases of revision of the discourse structure entailing a modification of the right frontier. We show that the coordinating or subordinating nature of discourse relations plays a major role in this revision, examining in particular a relation typical in narratives, Result, as well as a family of dialogues relations: contentrelations introduced by interrogatives. Th...
متن کاملAbstract for WPSI IV
for WPSI IV. Joseph Tyler, University of Michigan. At least since Harris (1952), researchers have studied how language is organized above the level of a single sentence. A number of approaches have been proposed, e.g. using semantic and pragmatic information, assessments of social action, and inferences about speaker intentions. But how do we know if a theory captures how speakers mentally repr...
متن کاملRhetorical Relations and Verb Placement in Early Germanic Languages Evidence from the Old High German Tatian Translation (9 century)
This is a first attempt at describing word order variation in the early Germanic languages in a dynamic model of discourse relations as outlined in the Segmented Discourse Relation Theory SDRT by Asher and Lascarides (2003). The study aims at investigating the interrelation between information structure and discourse organisation in the text of the Old High German Tatian translation (9 century)...
